A The colon, or large intestine, is the last portion of the digestive system. The colon is approximately five feet long and 2½ inches in diameter. Its main function is to eliminate waste and conserve water.

Colonic hydrotherapy is not recommended to anyone who is suffering from the following:
- Severe cardiac disease (uncontrolled hypertension or congestive heart failure)
- Aneurysm
- Severe anaemias
- GI haemorrhage or perforation
- Severe haemorrhoids
- Cirrhosis
- Carcinoma of the colon or rectum
- Fissures or fistulas
- Abdominal hernia
- Renal insufficiency
You are also unable to have a colonic during pregnancy, or if you have had recent colon or abdominal surgery.
You may have a colonic under the direct supervision of a doctor if you have:
- Diverticulitis
- Ulcerative colitis
- Crohn's disease
- cardiac problems

A pencil thin disposable tube (4cm long) is used for the treatment, which is much smaller than many stools people pass. It is not uncomfortable and many people can't feel the tube when it is inserted into the rectum.
Q I'm too embarrassed to have a colonic
A Many people are nervous when they have their first colonic treatment - it's natural. Tao Hydrotherapy's complimentary treatments are provided in a calm and relaxed environment by a professional therapist, who is skilled at putting you at ease and minimizing discomfort.
You will have a consultation with an experienced therapist who will explain the procedure and the treatment, and discuss any concerns or issues you may have. During the treatment you are covered from the waist down at all times. Our treatment rooms are private, hygienic and comfortable, and ensure your complete privacy and dignity at all times.
Q Do I need to prepare for a colonic?
A It is really important that you do not eat for two hours before your treatment. You will also have a more effective treatment if you are hydrated, so drink extra water in the days leading up to your treatment for best results.
Q What can I expect after a colonic?
A You should feel fine after colonic hydrotherapy treatment and not experience any unwanted side-effects. As soon as the treatment is finished you can carry on with your daily routine. You may experience several bowel movements for a few hours, but there won't be any uncontrollable urgency or discomfort. It is possible you may feel light-headed or chilled for a few moments following colonic, but for many people they feel lighter and experience a sense of well-being.

You are in control of the treatment and can stop the water flow at any time.
The equipment is clean and sterilised and a new disposable tube is used for each treatment.
Q How many treatments are needed?
A The number of treatments you have is entirely your choice. Some people have one; many people have a course of treatments.
It is almost impossible to empty the colon completely as it is an organ which is in continuous use. Many of us have a considerable amount of impacted waste in our colon and one colonic treatment will remove some of this waste subsequent treatments will remove a great deal more.
Q How long does the treatment take?
A The treatment itself takes 30-40 minutes, but this can be shorter or longer depending on the client and the judgement of the therapist. On your first visit you will have a consultation with an experienced therapist who will look at your medical history and explain the colonic process and the equipment, so you should expect to be at the clinic for 1½ - 2 hours.
